Support, Transform and Achieve through Rugby

We support young people and their families by removing barriers that might otherwise stop access for young people in rugby, including access to transport, kit and wellbeing services. Most importantly we remove judgement.

Our mission

The STAR Scheme* is at the heart of our efforts. It focuses on supporting young people and families who have experienced ACEs, offering them a safe space in rugby to build resilience and recover from trauma.

Research shows that young people who face ACEs need opportunities to build trust with reliable adults and peers. Rugby provides this environment, fostering personal growth through strong connections and community support.

Through the STAR* Scheme, we provide:

  • Access to rugby: Removing barriers by providing essential resources like kit and transport.

  • Mentorship and guidance: Training coaches to better support young people and ensure they feel empowered to overcome challenges.

  • Connection with the community: Engaging with schools and local organizations to help young people who need support.

Our ultimate goal is to help these young people overcome adversity, become resilient, and emerge as future leaders of our community.

Our WHY?

Why do we do it? It's simple. We believe every young person deserves the chance to thrive, regardless of their background. By supporting children facing mental health issues, trauma, and social barriers, we can create a more positive future through rugby.

Rugby gives young people the tools to face life’s challenges with confidence. It helps them build resilience, form lasting friendships, and discover their potential—both on and off the field.

By getting involved with Norwest Bulls Rugby Club, you're not just supporting rugby; you're helping transform lives, one game at a time.

How We Achieve It

The STAR Scheme* works with rugby clubs and community partners to identify young people who can benefit from support. We focus on those who are financially disadvantaged, dealing with emotional or mental health challenges, or have experienced trauma.

Here’s how we support:

  1. Supporting Clubs and Coaches: We work closely with junior rugby clubs to identify and reach out to young people in need. Through funding, resources, and training, we ensure coaches and volunteers are well-equipped to support, helping them succeed both on and off the field.

  2. Removing Barriers to Participation: We provide the resources needed to ensure every young person can participate in rugby. This includes kit, transport, and even offering a friendly, welcoming environment where youth can feel comfortable and accepted.

  3. Training and Empowerment: We provide essential training to rugby coaches and officials so they can recognise the signs of trauma or emotional distress, and offer the appropriate support. With the right tools and resources, coaches can better help youth build their resilience and thrive.
